Hello all,
This is a case study of Eyjafjallajokull, a volcano in Iceland that erupted on 20th of March, 2010. This case study can be used in Common Entrance examination for the volcano case study in Geography exam. I hope you find it useful. I will publish a few other Geography case studies for Common Entrance later.
EFFECTS:
ENVIRONMENTAL:
-Spewed mix of pulverized glass and rock, which devastates ecosystem in the short term
-Glass and rock mixture prevents photosynthesis in plants, greenery in Iceland and Northern Europe have to fight to survive
-Ash may kill animals if digested
-200% rise in activity of Katla, volcano near Eyjafjallajokull, but much bigger and more dangerous if erupted
ECONOMIC:
-Ash settles on farms and water supplies, harvest may be smaller then usual
-Five days, no flights, airlines losing millions of euros a day; German airline Lufthansa lost 25 million euros a day during the no-flight period
-Total losses equal 1 billion euros per no flight day, 5 billion euros in total
SOCIAL:
-Flight delays (medical treatments, global research meetings, all put on hold b/c of people stuck
-Residents of Eyjafjallajokull area evacuating due to rapid and extreme flooding
-Damage from flooding, iceberg fragments making water dangerous. Main bridge in Eyjafjallajokull area serious damaged but not collapsed yet
-Considerable damage in Eyjafjallajokull area
HUMAN RESPONSE:
-Eyjafjallajokull area evacuated due to flooding
-Stories reported, ingenuity, people being rescued from abroad. Dunkirk-like spirit
Thanks!
-Melanie
PS Here is a tip for learning how to spell Eyjafjallajokull. Think of it in three sections: "Eyjaf", "Jalla", "Jokull". It's a lot simpler if you just learn those three sections and put them together. The "o" in "Jokull" has two dots over it, but I can't do symbols, so just remember that when you're spelling it.
PPS Pronounced (Ay-yah-FYAH-lah-yer-kuhl)
PPPS Good luck in CE!

Hey everyone,
Right now, D & L are talking loudly. Like really annoyingly. While yours truly, Miss Melanie, is trying to write a post on her blog; Gone With the Wind. This weekend was an EW! That means I get to visit Billy. You will never guess who he is. He's not what you think!
Anyway, enough riddles and tales, it's time for question of the day:
How come you have every reason to be happy, but you're not?
See you tomorrow,
Melanie

Hi,
I have just had to have tea with O's mum, dad and granny, though her mum looked ancient to me. I'm so glad mine doesn't look like that! I had a tour around QS today and I have to say, it looked fab. I hope I pass EE so I can go there! There's me, blabbering on again. What have you been doing? I'd love it if you could leave me a comment so I'd know there's actually someone out there!
Okay, enough blabbering. Question of the day:
Do we have desires, or are we desires?
See you later!

I haven't posted anything for a couple of days, sorry! I know no-one's actually read anything I'm writing but I HOPE someone will eventually! I think people should look at small blogs too, not just BLOGS OF NOTE!!!!!! Yeah. So, I have to do my---- oops! I almost just told you about the real me, not just Melanie. I shall call the work I have to complete by Friday that is uber-important R. Just as I call one of my family members that I talk about a lot L. Becuase what you see is what you get, and you're not seeing anything but Melanie. ANYWAY, I was watching ANTM (you'll find THAT out easily enough if you bother to go on Google.) and I really liked this week's photo shoot, because I think horses are really beautiful. But enough about all-important moi, what were you doing??? I have to get on with R now, otherwise L is going to get MAD!!!
Here's my question of the day:
Can people be born good or evil?
Sincerely,
Melanie
PS Do you watch ANTM? You should, it's really good!!

Hi anyone and everyone,
L is reading the paper. I am chillaxing blogging. Chillax- a mix of 'chill' and 'relax' mixed into one word. I say chillax a lot. I just want to know one thing- is anyone actually reading this? I know I have no comments, so there must not be anybody, but it would be nice to actually find out if there's anyone out there. I have decided to do a question of the day, so if anyone's actually reading this, it would be great to hear your answer by sending me a comment. I promise I'm not some creepy weirdo or stalker guy- I just feel alone in my blogging. So- now I'm going to stop talking nonsense and ask my question of the day. Okay, here goes nothing:
Why does everyone pretend to be something they're not?
I personally think it's because they're trying to be cool and fit in with the popular crowd. That sounds very school-ish but I think it's true. But whatever, you may have a different opinion. So, tell me!
See you later,
Melanie
